Tremendous results have been achieved by VOC athletes at World Youth, Canadian Legion and Provincial Championships. We are very proud of our athletes, Jasper Schiedel and Anastase Eliopoulos. Included with this group of athletes is Thomas Nobbs in middle distance this track season.
Nobbs is doing a superb job of leading the VOC endurance group in their Cross Country training until the end of October when our BC 800m Provincial Champion, Devan Wiebe, will come back to the team from training with the UBC group.
On Sept.19, Thomas Nobbs, a grade 11 from Point Grey Secondary, made his first appearance in 5 km at Sundodger Cross Country Meet, in Seattle, WA, running against the top US high School athletes. His amazing results of 15:32.90, among the top times of BC High School athletes in this X-C meet, ranked him in 7th place (third for grade 11 boys), and shows his potential in distance events. This has attracted the interest of many US University programs.
Nobbs and VOC distance runners continue to compete successfully at the Lower Mainland Series South Fraser X-C meet, achieving great results.
Thomas won the 4 km leading from start to finish with a great time of 12:12.50 followed by teammate, Ben Paetzel, in second place with 13:10.60. Paetzel also ran at the Pinetree Classic on Sept.19, a personal best of 3 min18 secs. from last year.
In the 13 year old category, Kendra Lewis was impressive, running step by step with the leading boy and winning the 3 km race for girls with a tremendous time of 10:24:30
In the 12 year old girls category, high jumper, Sophie Fernback, won the Bronze medal with a time of 11:34.70 and Stephanie Berringer came in 6th place with a good time of 12:17.50.
Hugh Hartloper ran a solid 2 km race and came 11th for 11 years old with a good time 8:18.90.
VOC Athletes came home with 4 medals at South Fraser, two Gold, one Silver and one Bronze.
Congratulations to VOC athletes in theur success so far this Cross Country Season.
